Sarah Brown-Clark is the new Clerk of Courts for the City of Youngstown. Her experience as a Youngstown State faculty member and past president of the Youngstown Board of Education will serve her well as she takes on the duties of Clerk of Court.
Melissa M. Long, a very active member of the caucus, was elected Mayor of the City of Cortland. Mayor Long will be a knowledgeable and energetic public official whose main concern will be the quality of life for her constituents.
We extend not only our best wishes to Sarah and Melissa, but also our confidence that they will always be guided by their integrity, their conscience, and their commitment to public service.
The MVWPC also congratulates: Artis Gillam, Sr., who won the race for Youngstown City Council in the First Ward; Rufus Hudson, who is the Youngstown City Council member for the Second Ward; Richard Atkinson, who won his bid for Youngstown’s Third Ward City Councilman; and John Sweirz, who was re-elected to Youngstown’s City Council from Seventh Ward.
At the general membership meeting Nov. 8th at the Boardman Belleria, Dr. William C. Binning, provided excellent post-election analysis. Thank you, Dr. Binning!
A special thanks is due Kathy Duzzny, Endorsement and PAC Committee Chair, for the professional way she conducted the candidate endorsement process. From mailing and processing the candidates’ questionnaires, to running the endorsement meetings, to interfacing with the media...it was a big job. She deserves our thanks and appreciation, as well as our admiration.
The Caucus is honored to host an event which recognizes outstanding females in elective office. We are particularly proud of Judges Judith Christley, Cheryl Waite, Maureen Cronin, Beth Smith, Pamela Rintala, Melissa Emmerling, and Theresa Dellick who are among the Mahoning Valley's best and brightest officeholders.
Dr. Carol A. Cartwright, President of Kent State University, will be the keynote speaker. As the first female president of a state university in Ohio, she is a pacesetter in her own right. This is a landmark event for the MVWPC because it brings together some of the most respected women in Ohio. Dr. Cartwright, as the president of a public university in Ohio, oversees one of the country's largest university systems and an annual budget of more than $300 million.
Dr. Cartwright currently serves on the board of Directors of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and is member of the National Board of the First Ladies Libraries. She also serves on the Steering Committee of the national education initiative "America Reads, America Counts."
In August 1999, President Clinton appointed her to the Board of Trustees of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, a component of the Smithsonian Institution which fosters scholarship and dialogue in international relations throughout the humanities and social sciences.
If you have never been to The Youngstown Country Club, take this opportunity to enjoy the amenities of this prestigious facility which is located in Liberty at 1402 Country Club Lane. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be served at 6:00 p.m. Dinner will follow at 7:00 p.m.
This newsletter will be the only mailing members will receive on this event. If you would like to attend, please make your reservations early as seating is limited. Clip and mail the Reservation Form opposite this page with your check.
Happy Holidays...and see you in The New Millenium!
Melanie Blumberg, Chair of the MVWPC
One of the best ways for concerned citizens to get to know public officials is by attending community events. Remember, networking is an important activity for women in business and politics. Please take note that the location for our general membership meetings is changed now that Cooker’s Restaurant is closed. We will be meeting at the Belleria in Boardman (Market St., just past Western-Reserve Rd.) until further notice. They have a meeting room we can use for free. If you know of another “free place” where you’d like to go, let us know.
Andrea Wood, Editor of The Business Journal, Guest Speaker at the Dec. 2nd General Meeting at Boardman's Belleria.
Andrea Wood, editor of The Business Journal for nearly 15 years, spoke to a group of members at the Dec. 2nd meeting. She shared her thoughts, opinions, and fears about the state of local and national media. Ms. Wood explained the recent local media mergers and the negative impact these may have on our access to unbiased news. She is also concerned about the future of news in general with the Internet carrying loads of inaccuracies.
It was an interesting evening to say the least. And I will say "the least" because the conversation was informal and off the record. My apologies to the many members who wanted to hear Ms. Wood...I got the newsletter out too late for many of you. Hopefully, that won't happen again!
